"Pfyfoltru" is not just a brand in Varen. "Pfyfoltru" is lived in Varen. In collaboration with the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park, the municipal workers have upgraded areas in their community.
The butterflies in Varen will be delighted: instead of exotic plants, the wine island is now adorned with native plants suited to the location. "We have selected plants that serve as a source of food for various animals. We connect habitats through stepping stone biotopes," says Evelyne Oberhummer, Head of Department at the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park. But people also benefit: "Anyone who walks past the newly designed areas benefits twice over. You can enjoy the variety of plants and the subtle scent. And plants can be harvested for the cooking pot". The plants were planted in the red and blue colors typical of the wine island with a few additional yellow and white flowers.
Biodiversity in the settlement area
The municipality of Varen is implementing the federal government's biodiversity strategy in an exemplary manner with the help of the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park. In April, the municipal workers and locals received advice and further training from the nature park team at a workshop day. In the meantime, the motivated team from the depot has implemented the planting. The credo of preferring native plants to exotic ones will be upheld in the future: new areas will be tackled every year.
