To the north of the Ermitage restaurant, they stand directly on the hiking trail between the Pfynwald ponds - the 16 m high, brick pillars. And many people have wondered what these two structures in the middle of the protected area are all about. Anyone in the region with an eye for historical buildings of this kind will also know that there are two very similar structures directly on the Rotten to the north-east of Leuk railroad station.
Because the nature park is committed to the preservation and enhancement of natural and cultural values, it commissioned historian Stephan Hermann to investigate the origins of these pillars. The result is a scientifically sound report, which you can download at the end of the article. Although some light has been shed on these buildings, not all questions have been answered. This report now clearly shows which sources have been searched and where further research would be worthwhile.
However, it is already clear that the four-century-old buildings should be preserved and valued.
