"Littering" is an Anglicism and stands for the careless throwing away or leaving behind of waste outside the designated places. Whether PET, paper, glass or cigarettes - such "wild" waste has a negative impact on health, the environment and the economy, as it pollutes soil, plants and water and causes high cleaning and disposal costs.
In order to raise public awareness of the effects of this behavior, the Department of the Environment has launched a poster campaign. The illustrations are available for download (see below).
Every year in September, the IGSU promotes Clean-Up Day, a national waste collection day. To raise public awareness and clean up public spaces, the canton strongly encourages municipalities, businesses and associations to take part in such events.
The Littering Toolbox contains examples of measures to combat littering and is available free of charge. It is primarily intended for organizations that want to combat this problem or launch an awareness-raising campaign.
Unfortunately, littering is also widespread in the countryside and in the mountains. The Summit Fondation is carrying out an awareness campaign against littering on the ski slopes, while the Swiss Farmers' Association and the French-speaking Swiss Agricultural Information Office "AGIR" have joined forces for their own campaign.
