Genomic basis of altitudinal adaptations in alpine carnations
This research project uses populations of two wild alpine carnation species to investigate the ecological processes and climatic conditions that play a role in adaptations to different altitudes.
Initial situation
Altitudinal gradients in the Alps correspond to steep ecological gradients characterized by variation in both biotic and abiotic factors. Plant populations in these environments commonly exhibit strong adaptation to contrasting conditions over short spatial distances, thus they represent ideal systems to uncover the mechanisms driving the evolution of local adaptation and the ability to respond to rapid environmental change.
Goal
Investigation of ecological processes and climatic conditions affecting wild alpine carnation species (Dianthus; Caryophyllaceae) in the canton of Valais, - Improving understanding of how plants adapt to their environment, - Assessing how plants respond to climate change. The two experimental areas in Leuk and Oberu have been in use since 2015.
