In many parts of Susten it can be heard day and night: the water flowing down north of the River Rhone behind the railway station that we call the “schreeund Bach” (the word “schreeu” was also used earlier to mean loud talking or shouting).

The parish church of St Stephen is in the centre of Leuk. The towering and imposing bell tower draws the visitor's attention to the stately building.
Living conditions in the steppe landscape are extreme for plants. The soil is stony and dry and it can get extremely hot in summer. In the Rottensand temperatures of up to 65 °C have been measured.
After the fire above Leuk different stages of revegetation can be observed. In many places the flower carpets of the red soapwort have made way for young forests, while other locations are still bare.
