St. Stephen's Parish Church

The parish church of St Stephen in Leuk-Town

The parish church of St Stephen is in the centre of Leuk. The towering and imposing bell tower draws the visitor's attention to the stately building.

The first church dates back to the 6th / 7th century. It was built making extensive use of an existing wall from a Roman road station. In the 13th century the belfry was added on the south side and a St Michael Chapel on the north side. The extensions have influenced the character of the present late Gothic building, which was started at the end of the 15th century and completed in 1514. The structure emerged in several stages as the date inscriptions verify: 1496 in the inscription under the picture of St Christopher in the south aisle, 1497 over the west portal and 1514 on the arch of the central nave. A coat of arms on a barrel vault of the west bay refers to the master builder Ulrich Ruffiner, who participated in completing the church.
