With landscape conservation efforts, chain-link fences are being removed and replaced with living fences made of green clippings, so-called Benje hedges, at 4 locations along the Illgraben.
This Benje's hedge marks and secures the path. At the same time, it offers habitat and shelter for small mammals and insects. A Benje's or deadwood hedge consists of piled up branches and twigs. It can be created as a fence or as privacy and wind protection. This creates a cost-effective but ecologically very valuable border structure. The annual clippings can be piled up there again and again. To ensure it remains stable and visually appealing, it needs regular maintenance.
