4 THE GREEN NETWORK

In Switzerland, the green lizard is only found in the Valais, Ticino and around Lake Geneva. It prefers to establish its territory in habitats with a dense herb layer interspersed with cairns, rock slabs or dry stone walls. Vineyards surrounded by such natural elements therefore provide a suitable habitat for the attractive lizard. The area we see here is part of the PTUZ property consolidation (Poja, Tschanderünu and Undri Zell zone) and serves as an ecological compensation area for nature and especially for the green lizard. But just as people want to be connected - for example by roads that link different houses or villages - nature also needs such oases that are connected by green corridors.

PTUZ: a low-impact consolidation of the land

At the end of the 1970s, a land consolidation was to be carried out in the area around today's Emerald Lizard Trail in the "Poja, Tschanderünu and Undri Zell" area: The PTUZ was defined. In 1995, an exemplary agreement was made between the PTUZ cooperative society and various nature conservation organisations, which laid down the measures to be taken to conserve nature in the PTUZ. In 2019, the Nature Park, the municipality of Salquenen and the Swiss Foundation for Landscape Conservation redesigned the area here in front of you: valuable dry stone walls were built, shrubs were planted and small structures created

Sit down and enjoy the diversity in this oasis. We need this green network too - don't we?
