1 A WALL AS A RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY

Dry stone walls are an important cultural heritage and provide a habitat for numerous animals and plants. For example, wall lizards and green lizards like to retreat into the cracks between the stones, while various bird and insect species use the gaps as breeding sites. These valuable dry stone walls need our care, however, to prevent them from decaying and disappearing. This is also true for many other habitats: every day the area of unimproved, near-natural land decreases, contributing to the loss of biodiversity. The Pfyn-Finges Nature Park therefore actively supports the preservation and reconstruction of decayed dry stone walls so that this habitat and the species associated with it do not disappear from our region.

Observe first a dry stone wall and then a sealed wall up close. How many animals and plants can you discover in each case?
