8 TOGETHER: MAN AND NATURE

In agriculture in particular, it often seems difficult to reconcile the interests of humans with the needs of nature. However, we can discover that this is possible in these vineyards. Depending on how the different plots are managed, they can provide a valuable habitat for all kinds of animals and plants in addition to grape production. The rare woodlark is a prime example of this interplay between humans and nature. In Valais, it breeds almost exclusively in vineyards, preferring plots where the soil is vegetated. On the one hand, such areas are home to significantly more insects, which the woodlark needs to raise its young. On the other hand, the vegetation protects the nest, which it creates on the ground between the vines. Near-natural vineyards that offer diverse ground vegetation and are surrounded by hedges, trees or dry stone walls are home to insects, green lizards and other birds such as the cirl bunting or the linnet.

There is much to discover on the Green Lizard Trail. Have you observed and recognised an animal or plant species? You can post your observations on observation portals such as www.ornitho.ch or NaturaList-App APP-Sotre Playstore
