7 OPPOSITES CREATE DIVERSITY: THE SOUTH-FACING SLOPE

Due to the east-west course of the main Valais valley, the sunny south-facing slope of the Rhone Valley differs from the shadier north-facing slope. Here we see the beautiful Valais rocky steppe on the south-facing slope. Specialists such as the feather grass, the Valais flake flower or the praying mantis live here and have adapted to the dry and hot habitat conditions.

Also visible are the two traditional irrigation canals, the so-called Suonen, which can be identified by the two more heavily wooded parallel lines. The dry southern slope is populated by downy oaks and juniper bushes, while attractive pines thrive on the banks of the water pipes. The post "Opposites create diversity: The North-facing Slope” on the opposite side of the circular trail offers an impressive view of the forested Gorwetschgrat on the north-facing slope.

Behind you, a road runs up onto a plateau. Follow the path and enjoy the magnificent view in all directions at the top
