Naturpark Pfyn-Finges: Successful environmental education starting at school

The Pfyn-Finges Nature Park has been raising awareness of the natural and cultural values of the region for years. An important topic here is the use of our resources. In the area of environmental education, those responsible rely on partner schools, which have developed into a successful model over the last 3 years. After the schools in Leuk, Susten, Sonnenberge and the gd-Schule Bratscher, Leukerbad and Salgesch have now also been awarded the title of "Partner School Pfyn-Finges Nature Park".

Pupils can experience the natural phenomena around their school and in their village from the school building, on foot or by bike. In this way, the nature park and the partner schools contribute to energy-saving mobility, as unnecessary transportation by car is avoided. However, the experience of recent years also clearly shows that the learning content is consolidated more sustainably in the pupils if it takes place in their familiar surroundings.

The annual program is defined jointly by the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park and the teaching teams of the partner schools. School projects such as school gardens, nesting boxes for birds or nature activities are part of active learning. Armin Christen, Head of Environmental Education at the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park, is convinced: "We have developed a concept that picks up on and encourages the children's natural impulse to learn. That's why it has a lasting effect and is fun for the pupils!". Jan Zenhäusern, head teacher in Leukerbad, agrees: "The collaboration with the nature park is a great benefit for our schools and represents clear added value. The Nature Park's annual program is perfectly tailored to each level and the pupils are much more aware of nature and the environment. We are very pleased that Salgesch and Leukerbad are among the partner schools of the nature park."
