The Pfynwald forest is managed by Forst Region Leuk on behalf of the Burgerschaft Leuk and under the direction of the Service for Forests, River Engineering and Landscape, District of Upper Valais. Under the project name "Waldreservat Pfynwald - Bois de Finges", the objectives and measures have been defined and implemented since 2008 in order to maintain a species-rich and dynamic forest.
The clearings are intended to revive the old use of the Pfynwald forest. Around 60 years ago, the majority of the population of Leuk-Stadt and the surrounding villages were still self-sufficient. Usable grazing land was rare and in demand, as was the Pfynwald. The houses were also largely heated with wood. At that time, the Pfynwald was heavily used for agriculture and forestry.
With industrialization, the needs of the population changed, moving away from self-sufficiency to employment. This also had an impact on the landscape and the Pfynwald. The once sparse forests, with a lot of grazing and forestry interventions, were no longer used and a dense, closed pine forest developed. The Scots pine displaced many other tree and plant species.
With these measures, the densely forested Pfynwald will be opened up here and there to create various gaps, allowing more light to reach the ground again. This increases biodiversity and increases the food supply for many animal and insect species. In addition, the areas are grazed to counteract reforestation in the long term.
