Before Easter, almost 100 schoolchildren from Leukerbad lent a hand around their village on Clean-up Day. The successful event was initiated by the municipality of Leukerbad and organized by the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park. Together with the maintenance depot, teachers and nature park staff, the motivated children and young people cleared litter from adjacent paths, meadows, forests and streams.
The pupils from 5H to 11H were made aware of the issue of waste by the nature park in advance of the day. Guides went into their classes and explained the connections between incorrectly disposed waste. They learned how metal parts swallowed by a cow have to be removed or how old fences pose a danger to wild animals. They had great fun experimenting with correct waste separation and the lifespan of objects. For example, a broken football was turned into a flower pot.
On Clean-up Day, the pupils were divided into 8 groups and accompanied by teachers and park staff. Highly motivated, they all diligently collected the garbage. Some students even fought their way through the undergrowth in the forest. The collected garbage was grouped together and then disposed of professionally by the park staff. The children were shocked at the large quantities of garbage collected. Cigarettes, beer bottles and cans were found in conspicuous quantities. As a thank you, the nature park community of Leukerbad offered the pupils a delicious "Zaabud" and the nature park gave them a reusable drinking bottle.
The nature park municipality of Leukerbad is one of 12 municipalities in the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park and has been awarded the distinction of Regional Nature Park of National Importance due to its unique and outstanding natural and landscape values. This campaign supported the preservation of this unique region and raised awareness among the young population. With this aim in mind, the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park regularly organizes clean-up days throughout the park perimeter on request.
