Excursions
Birds of prey Febrary 17-19, 2012 By February, some birds of prey have already had their mating season, while for others, this is the peak of the season. We will take a good look at these birds and observe them extensively, focusing in particular on the eagle and the peregrine falcon. And with a bit of luck, we will come across the less easy to find Eurasian sparrowhawk and the goshawk while they hunt for prey. The weekend also includes information on how the bird population is developing, the trends of the individual species and some lovely observations. It also goes without saying that we will not pass up the chance to look at other species.
Owls March 23-25, 20112 To observe the species that are active during twilight, we will be out and about at irregular hours, which will mean moving our meal and rest times to a later time. This means that this weekend can be somewhat demanding. On the excursions, we will also talk about habitats, where they roost and the dangers faced and posed by the various species, as well as observing them. In addition, short talks about the eagle owl will be held in the hotel. Species we expect to see are the tawny owl, the Eurasian pygmy owl, the eagle owl and maybe Tengmalm's owl. However, there are no guarantees for any species. The eagle owl research program at the University of Bern will provide us with many new insights into the life of this large and powerful bird.
The rich birdlife of Leuk May 16 - 20, 2012 The Swiss Atlas of Breeding Birds describes the region of Leuk as one of the most unspoiled cultural landscapes in Switzerland and points out that it is home to the greatest number of species in the country. Nature lovers and, in particular, bird lovers will certainly not be disappointed by the Valais rocky steppes, Leukerfeld and Pfyn-Finges Forest.
Birdlife Week June 2 - 9, 2012 Experience a varied week in the region of Leuk. We will also have enough time for a little trip to Dérborence, in the forest fire area of Leuk, as well as other interesting places.
Hoopoes June 22-24, 2012 For several years now, there have been very successful efforts made in Lower Valais to protect the hoopoe. In Central and upper Valais, too, the species is receiving targeted support. The aim of this weekend is to inform participants about the species conservation program and the scientific studies currently being carried out, all in a relaxed way. And of course, there should also be plenty of opportunities to observe the animals themselves.
Bearded vultures October 5-7, 2012 The first reintroduction of bearded vultures into the wild took place 20 years ago. Since then, there have been repeated individual sightings of vultures in Valais. It seems that these birds especially like our valley, since several vultures have now settled here. This weekend will provide a great deal of information about these birds - the largest in the Alps - and the story of their resettlement. And last, but certainly not least, there should be plenty of good opportunities to observe these birds.
Number of participants is limited. Registration obligatory!
